Brain AVM Symptoms
Arteriovenous malformations are most commonly located in the brain and the spine. An AVM can be entirely asymptomatic until it ruptures or bursts. Some of the most common symptoms of a brain AVM include:
- Seizures
- Headaches
- Audible “whooshing” sound
- Weakness
- Numbness
The symptoms of a brain AVM can vary greatly depending on its location, the patient's age and the severity of the rupture. A particularly troubling neurological AVM may cause more serious symptoms including:
- Paralysis
- Vision loss
- Difficulty speaking
- Poor balance
- Inability to comprehend speech
Any of the above brain AVM symptoms are cause for serious concern. If any of these symptoms appear, seek medical help immediately.
Brain AVM Causes
Brain AVMs are essentially random; most people with an AVM are born with one and they are likely formed as a part of fetal development. It is known that more men suffer from AVMs than women, family history may play a role in vascular malformations.
Brain AVMs are formed when there is an abnormal connection between the arteries and veins in the brain. Here is how this process normally functions:
- The heart sends oxygenated blood to the arteries.
- The arteries branch in to small arterioles, which in turn branch into the small blood vessels known as capillaries.
- The oxygen is taken from the blood in the capillaries and used by the brain.
- The same blood, now free of oxygen, is passed to the veins which return it to the heart and lungs in order to become re-oxygenated.
When a brain AVM is present, however, this process is heavily disrupted. Instead of the blood following the normal circulation pattern, it goes directly from the arteries to the veins through abnormal vessels. When this occurs, blood builds up and can eventually burst, leading to the symptoms listed above.
Brain AVM Treatment
Thankfully, brain AVMs are treatable in many cases. All treatment plans for AVMs begin with testing to determine if an AVM is present. Some possible brain AVM tests include:
- CT scan
- MRI
- Cerebral arteriography
If an AVM is determined to be present, treatment can begin. Most treatments for brain AVMs involve removing the AVM itself. Common brain AVM treatments include:
- Surgical removal (microsurgery)
- Endovascular embolization
There is no one best option for the treatment of brain AVMs. For AVMs that are deep in the brain, radiosurgery may be the recommend option. For easily accessible AVMs, traditional surgery may be more effective.
