Nerve Conduction Study in Midland Park, NJ

Nerve Testing Midland Park, NJThe nerves are essential to how the body functions. They communicate all of your voluntary and involuntary movements to the rest of your system and relay sensations such as pain, heat and cold.

Nerves carry out this function through electrical impulses that travel throughout the nervous system. These electrical impulses can sometimes be stopped or weakened due to a variety of illnesses or nerve damage .

Nerve conduction study allows the nerves to be tested, ensuring they are working properly. To request more information about nerve conduction testing, call (201) 806-6099 or contact Dr. M.T. Shahab online.

What is Nerve Conduction Study?

A nerve conduction study (NCS), sometimes referred to as nerve conduction testing or nerve conduction velocity test, is a medical exam that determines the speed of the electrical impulses through a given nerve.

This test can determine if a nerve has been damaged, disrupted or, in worst case scenarios, destroyed. Nerve conduction study is often performed alongside an electromyography (EMG) , which checks the electrical activity in the muscles.

Nerve conduction testing takes only a few minutes, and is typically performed by a neurologist or technician. During the NCS:

  • All metal clothing and jewelry is removed, so as to not interfere with the procedure.
  • Electrodes are attached to the nerves being tested.
  • A mild electrical shock is delivered, which stimulates the nerve.
  • After the nerve is stimulated, a readout is given on a monitor that displays the amount of electrical activity happening within the nerve.

Nerve conduction study requires no downtime and typical daily activities can be resumed immediately after.

What can Nerve Conduction Study Discover?

Nerve conduction testing and electromyography are useful in determining if nerve damage has taken place. That means that NCS can be used to determine if a variety of nervous system disorders or injury-related damage are present.

Nerve conduction study also tests for more advanced nerve disorders such as Guillain-Barre syndrome and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
