What is Minimally Invasive Lateral Interbody Fusion?

Minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion is a surgical procedure designed to be minimally disruptive. This means that it minimizes incisions, scarring, pain and recovery time. This is done by making one or more small incisions and performing the surgery through those openings with special tools. This is contrary to traditional spine surgery, which instead features one large “open” incision.

Minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion sometimes known by its trade name, eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF), has been used to treat many different conditions that affect the spine. This procedure specifically targets the spinal discs.

Conditions treated by minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion:

How Does Minimally Invasive Lateral Interbody Fusion Work?

Minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion treats diseased, slipped and damaged discs by entering through a small incision in the side of the body. This is known as the lateral part of the body, which gives the procedure its name.

During the minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion procedure:

  • A small incision is made into the side of the body. A device known as a “retractor” holds this incision open for surgery.
  • The affected spinal disc is located. In many cases, this disc is removed as it has slipped or degenerated and is causing pain.
  • An implant is inserted in to the space that the spinal disc previous occupied. This implant will fully integrate with the spine in a process known as fusion.
  • Typically a brace or fixation will be used hold everything in place and facilitate fusion. This often comes in the form of durable pedicle screws and rods.

This minimally disruptive approach has many benefits over traditional “open” fusion. Benefits of minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion include:

  • Shorter operation time
  • Reduced blood loss during surgery
  • Faster post-surgery recovery time
  • Small incision
  • Shorter hospital stay

To provide an example, a typical patient may be unable to walk for up to three days after “open” spinal fusion. After minimally invasive lateral interbody fusion, however, most patients are able to walk within the same day as surgery.
