This test can determine if a nerve has been damaged, disrupted or, in worst case scenarios, destroyed. Nerve conduction study is often performed alongside an electromyography (EMG) , which checks the electrical activity in the muscles.
Nerve conduction testing takes only a few minutes, and is typically performed by a neurologist or technician. During the NCS:
- All metal clothing and jewelry is removed, so as to not interfere with the procedure.
- Electrodes are attached to the nerves being tested.
- A mild electrical shock is delivered, which stimulates the nerve.
- After the nerve is stimulated, a readout is given on a monitor that displays the amount of electrical activity happening within the nerve.
